Dental disease is one of the most common health problems in cats and dogs — by the age of three, most pets have some degree of dental disease. Good oral health is essential for your pet's overall wellbeing.

Why Dental Care Matters

Untreated dental disease can cause significant pain and discomfort, difficulty eating, and can lead to infections that spread to other organs including the heart, kidneys, and liver. Regular dental check-ups can catch problems early before they become serious.

Signs of Dental Disease

  • Bad breath (halitosis)
  • Red, swollen, or bleeding gums
  • Yellow or brown tartar build-up on teeth
  • Difficulty eating or dropping food
  • Pawing at the mouth
  • Drooling more than usual
  • Reluctance to have the face or mouth touched

Dental Examinations

We check your pet's teeth and gums as part of every routine consultation. If we identify any concerns, we will discuss the best course of action with you. A thorough dental examination under general anaesthetic allows us to assess each tooth individually, probe for pockets, and take dental X-rays if necessary.

Scale and Polish

A professional dental scale and polish, performed under general anaesthetic, removes plaque and tartar above and below the gum line. This is the most effective way to treat and prevent periodontal disease. The procedure is similar to a dental hygienist clean in human dentistry and is one of the most common procedures we perform.

Dental Extractions

If a tooth is severely diseased, loose, or fractured, extraction may be the best option to relieve pain and prevent infection. Our team is experienced in performing dental extractions safely and will ensure your pet receives appropriate pain relief throughout their recovery.

Home Dental Care

The best way to keep your pet's teeth healthy between dental check-ups is regular tooth brushing. We recommend:

  • Daily brushing with a pet-specific toothpaste (never use human toothpaste)
  • Dental diets and chews that carry the VOHC seal of approval
  • Regular dental check-ups at the practice

Ask our nursing team for a demonstration on how to brush your pet's teeth.
