Parasite prevention for pets

Parasite Control

Back to Services

Parasites are a common problem for pets in the UK. Regular preventative treatment is essential to keep your pet healthy and comfortable. Our team can advise on the best parasite control programme for your pet.

Fleas

Fleas are the most common external parasite affecting cats and dogs in the UK. They can cause skin irritation, allergic dermatitis, and can transmit tapeworms.

We recommend year-round flea prevention. Over-the-counter products are often less effective than prescription treatments available from your vet.

Signs of Fleas

  • Excessive scratching or biting at the skin
  • Small dark specks in the coat (flea dirt)
  • Hair loss, particularly along the back and tail base
  • Red, irritated skin

Ticks

Ticks are increasingly common in the UK and can transmit serious diseases including Lyme disease. They are most active in spring and autumn but can be found year-round in some areas.

We stock effective tick prevention products and can show you how to safely remove ticks using a tick hook. Never try to pull a tick out with your fingers as the mouthparts may be left behind.

Worms

The main types of worms affecting pets in the UK are roundworms and tapeworms. Lungworm is an increasingly serious threat to dogs.

Worming Recommendations

  • Puppies and kittens: every 2 weeks until 12 weeks old, then monthly until 6 months
  • Adult dogs: every 3 months (monthly if at high risk of lungworm)
  • Adult cats: every 3 months for outdoor cats, less frequently for indoor-only cats

Lungworm Warning

Lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) is spread by slugs and snails and can be fatal if untreated. Dogs that eat slugs, snails, or grass are at risk. Standard worming tablets do not protect against lungworm — ask us about specific prevention.

Parasite Prevention Plans

We can create a tailored parasite prevention plan for your pet based on their lifestyle and risk factors. Regular prevention is much more effective (and usually cheaper) than treating an infestation after it occurs.
