Weight Clinics
Obesity is a growing problem in pets and can lead to serious health issues. Our weight clinics provide structured, supportive weight management programmes to help your pet reach and maintain a healthy weight.
Why Weight Matters
It is estimated that over 50% of dogs and cats in the UK are overweight or obese. Carrying excess weight puts additional strain on your pet's body and can lead to or worsen:
- Arthritis and joint problems
- Diabetes mellitus
- Heart and respiratory disease
- Reduced life expectancy (overweight dogs live up to 2.5 years less)
- Increased anaesthetic risk
- Skin problems
- Reduced quality of life
Our Weight Clinic Programme
Our weight clinics are run by our experienced nursing team and are designed to provide ongoing support throughout your pet's weight loss journey. The programme includes:
- An initial assessment including body condition scoring and target weight calculation
- A personalised feeding plan with specific daily calorie targets
- Regular weigh-ins (typically fortnightly) to monitor progress
- Adjustments to the feeding plan as needed
- Exercise advice tailored to your pet's abilities
- Ongoing encouragement and support
Getting Started
If you think your pet might be overweight, or if you're unsure, bring them in for a weight check. Our nurses offer free weight assessments and can advise whether a weight clinic programme would benefit your pet.
Weight clinic consultations are free of charge. Prescription diet food is available at competitive prices from the practice.
